As online shopping has grown, e-commerce modelling has become one of the busiest areas of modelling work. Every new season, product and campaign needs photos and video for product pages. This guide explains what e-commerce modelling is, what brands look for and how to prepare.

What is e-commerce modelling?

E-commerce modelling means shooting for product pages in online stores. The goal is to show the product clearly: the fit, how the fabric falls, the colour and the details. The model carries the product rather than competing with it.

Shoots usually happen in a studio against a plain backdrop. Dozens of items can be shot in a single day, so pace, stamina and consistency matter.

How is it different from fashion shoots?

  • Pace: a campaign can spend hours on a few frames. In e-commerce you take a few poses per item and move on.
  • Posing: natural, repeatable poses that show the product, not dramatic ones.
  • Consistency: a brand shoots all products with similar angles and stance, and the model keeps that standard all day.
  • Range of looks and sizes: brands want people their customers can see themselves in, across ages and sizes.

What brands look for

  1. Measurements that fit the samples: sample clothes come in specific sizes, so accurate measurements matter.
  2. Ease on camera: changing poses quickly and naturally.
  3. Reliability: arriving on time, prepared, and keeping your energy up all day.
  4. Clean, current photos: images that show you as you are, without filters or heavy retouching.

How to prepare for an e-commerce shoot

  • Before the shoot: take care of hair and skin the day before, keep nails simple, and bring the underwear (usually nude and seamless) and shoes the brief asks for.
  • On the day: follow the stylist and photographer. For each item, be ready with front, side, back and movement poses.
  • A posing routine: relaxed shoulders, weight on one leg, arms clear of the product. Build a routine of 5–6 poses — hands in pockets, a walking step, a slight turn.
  • Speak up: if something doesn't fit or feels uncomfortable, say so straight away; finding out later wastes everyone's time.

Usage rights

E-commerce images mostly run on product pages and the brand's social channels. Where, in which countries and for how long they're used affects the fee. Ask for this to be agreed in writing before work starts.
