How model fees work

"How much should I charge?" is the question new models ask most. There's no single right number: fees depend on the project, usage rights, country and experience. This guide covers what drives a fee and what to check before you accept an offer.

What drives the fee

1. Usage rights: where the images run (website, social, ads, outdoor), in which countries and for how long is the biggest factor. An image used in paid ads for a long time is worth more than one used only on a product page.
2. Shoot length: hourly, half day or full day. Agree up front how prep, fittings and travel time are counted.
3. Project type: e-commerce, campaign, commercial, event or UGC.
4. Experience and portfolio: similar past work strengthens your position.
5. Special requests: a specific haircut or colour, lingerie or swimwear, physically demanding or risky shoots.
6. Exclusivity: if you're asked not to work with competitors for a period, that should be paid for separately.

Questions to ask about an offer

• Which channels and countries will the images be used in?
• For how long? Is there an extra fee if usage is extended?
• How many hours is the shoot, and how is overtime paid?
• When and how will you be paid? Is an invoice needed?
• Who covers travel and accommodation?
• Who handles wardrobe, make-up and hair?

Why a written agreement matters

Verbal agreements are easy to misunderstand. Even a short written agreement covering fee, dates, usage rights and payment terms protects both sides. Ask about anything you don't understand before signing.

Unpaid work: TFP and test shoots

When you're starting out, you may do unpaid "time for print" (TFP) shoots to build a portfolio. Even then:

• agree where the photos will be used,
• agree which photos you'll receive and when,
• bring someone you trust.

Working unpaid is not the same as paying to get work. Be careful with anyone who promises jobs and asks you for money.

Tax

Model income is taxed differently from country to country. If you work regularly, talk to an accountant.
