Modest fashion photoshoot prep: hijab styling, outfits and posing

Before and on the day of a modest fashion shoot: hijab styling for camera, your pin kit, an e-commerce posing routine and a checklist.

In a modest fashion shoot, what sells the product is a neatly styled hijab, the natural drape of the fabric and relaxed, confident poses. Whether it's your first shoot or you're refreshing your portfolio, this checklist makes the day easier.

Preparing for a modest fashion shoot

The day before

  • Read the brief: How many products? Which hijab style? Will an underscarf be used? If anything is unclear, ask before the shoot.
  • Pack your basics: Nude and black underscarves, straight pins, safety pins, magnetic pins, a small mirror, nude underwear.
  • Steam your clothes: If you're shooting in your own outfits, check for creases and lint.
  • Prep your skin: Moisturise and skip heavy make-up. Most e-commerce shoots want a natural look.

Hijab styles that work on camera

The camera picks up details you won't notice in the mirror. Watch for:

  1. Symmetry: In front shots, an even drape on both sides makes the product look neater.
  2. The hairline edge: Keep the underscarf or hijab edge straight; slips and bumps show immediately.
  3. Style to suit the fabric: Silk and satin suit flowing styles; cotton and modal hold structured styles well.
  4. When the product isn't the hijab: Keep the hijab simple and colour-matched so it doesn't pull focus from the outfit.

An e-commerce posing routine

E-commerce shoots repeat a similar sequence for every product. Learning it speeds up the day:

  • Front, standing straight: Arms slightly away from the body, weight on one leg.
  • Three-quarter turn: Shows the cut and how the fabric falls.
  • Back: Shoulders relaxed, head turned slightly.
  • Movement: A step, a skirt swirl or a cape in motion — great for flowing fabrics.
  • Detail: Natural hands for buttons, cuffs, pockets and fabric texture.

Campaign and social shoots

Campaigns are as much about the story as the product: location, light and mood. For social content, being natural matters most. For short videos:

  • Practise looking straight into the lens and speaking in short sentences.
  • Pin your hijab so it stays neat while you move.
  • Think vertical (9:16) and keep the product in the centre of the frame.

If you enjoy making videos, our UGC creator guide shows how to turn that into work.

Shoot-day checklist

  • ID and any contract or consent form
  • Underscarves (nude + black), pins, magnetic pins
  • Nude underwear and comfortable shoes
  • Water, snacks, a phone charger
  • A message confirming your fee and usage rights in writing

Agree your boundaries in advance

If there's an outfit, crop or pose you're not comfortable with, say so before the shoot. Professional brands expect clear communication. On CastLyra our Community Guidelines prohibit inappropriate requests — if it happens, report it to us.
