How to become a UGC creator
No big following needed: what brands ask for, the kit you need, the structure of a good UGC video and usage rights.

UGC (user-generated content) is natural content filmed "through the eyes of a real customer" that brands use in ads and on product pages. Because brands pay for the content rather than your follower count, UGC is open to people without a large audience. This guide explains how it works and how to get started.
UGC creator vs. influencer
- An influencer reaches their own audience; the content is posted on their account.
- A UGC creator makes content for the brand; it usually runs in the brand's ads, website or social channels.
In UGC, the brand buys your content, not your followers. Good light, clear sound, easy-to-follow storytelling and a trustworthy presence matter more than audience size.
What brands ask for
- Product demos and unboxings: the honest first reaction of someone trying the product.
- How-to videos: short, step-by-step demonstrations.
- Experience and before/after stories: the benefit, told realistically.
- Photo sets: the product in everyday life.
Most briefs ask for vertical (9:16) videos of 15–60 seconds.
What you need to start
- A phone and daylight: a recent phone camera is enough; a window is your best light.
- Clear sound: a simple clip-on microphone makes a big difference.
- A calm background: tidy, with the product clearly in focus.
- Sample content: film 3–5 short examples with products you already own and use them as your portfolio.
The structure of a good UGC video
- First 2 seconds: a hook — a sentence or image that stops the scroll.
- Problem: a need the viewer recognises.
- Solution: show the product in use and explain it without exaggeration.
- Close: a short, clear recommendation.
Read the brand's brief carefully: required messages, words to avoid and delivery formats are usually listed there.
Usage rights and pricing
Agree up front where, for how long and on which channels the content will be used. Content that runs in paid ads for a long time is not the same as a one-off organic post. Put the agreement in writing — it protects both sides.
Remember: serious brands and platforms never ask you to pay to get work.
