How to spot fake casting calls: 9 warning signs

Modelling and acting are favourite targets for scammers. Messages like "we discovered you", "start right away" or "just a small admin fee" can cost you money and personal data. This guide explains how to spot fake casting calls and messages, and how to protect yourself.

The most important rule: you never pay to get work

A real job does not ask the model for a fee, deposit, "registration charge", "admin fee" or a compulsory paid photoshoot. Be suspicious of anyone who promises work and asks for money first. CastLyra never asks talent for payment either.

9 signs of a fake casting call

1. Payment up front: for registration, a file, training or a "portfolio package".
2. Too-good-to-be-true offers: very high fees with no questions about experience.
3. Pressure to decide now: "If you don't reply today, the spot is gone."
4. Vague brand and project: no company name, project type or shoot location.
5. Messages only: no company e-mail, website or phone — just social media or chat apps.
6. Unnecessary personal data: ID photos, bank details or passwords.
7. Inappropriate photo requests: underwear, nude or suggestive photos. A real casting does not ask for these at the first stage.
8. A well-known brand used without permission: the message doesn't come from the brand's official account or domain.
9. Avoiding a written agreement: they won't put fee, dates and usage rights in writing.

How to protect yourself

• Research: check the company's website, official social accounts and address. Search the brand name together with "scam".
• Verify through official channels: contact the brand using the details on its own website, not the number in the message.
• Limit personal data: share ID and bank details only once a contract is signed and payment is due, and only with a party you trust.
• Don't go alone: especially for first shoots, bring someone you trust and tell a friend the address.
• Get everything in writing: fee, dates, location, usage rights and duration.
• Trust your instincts: if something feels wrong, you can end the conversation.

• If you paid, contact your bank immediately.
• Keep screenshots of the messages, accounts and payments.
• Report the account to the platform.
• Contact the authorities where appropriate.
